“Saving Private Ryan”; its older, yet a classic. If you haven’t seen this movie, put your device down, watch and come back and read this. If you have seen it, this will make perfect sense. This movie was about following orders. Orders that a group of eight men did not want to follow, filled with grumbling, bad attitudes and diverting from the actual mission that was meant to save Private Ryan.
This movie has incredible meaning for believers.
In the film, Tom Hanks’ character was given a mission to save a man whose mother just lost three out of her four sons. But He didn’t get caught up with whether he agreed with the orders. He took his men on this mission, setting out for completion.
One of the most pivotal moments in the film is on their first attempt to save Private Ryan. The scene starts when they find themselves in combat in a small French town that had just been virtually leveled by warfare. Vin Diesel’s character began to deviate from orders that Tom Hanks’ character had given when he insists on taking a child along with them. The soldiers wrestle with this notion, thinking through their abilities to protect the child with what little they had. It was because of this commotion that the squad was put in harm’s way.
In the end, the captain’s answer was “no”, but Vin Diesel’s character continued to insist and was consequently shot by a sniper.
As the scene continues, a powerful moment comes when the wounded Vin Diesel holds out his arm, begging his squad to send his letter to his father thereby revealing the squad’s location to the sniper. The next sniper’s shot killed him instantly.
Did he listen to his orders? Sadly, no.
In the end, it cost him his life.
It made my husband and I stop and pray about our orders from our Commanding Officer.
You see, I don’t want to be diverted by the enemy or even by innocent by-standers. Our God is our Daily Bread who gives us orders for each day. But sometimes He will give us a glimpse of orders that will take us years to complete. A common term for this would be a “calling.”
And that calling is serious. It has grave repercussions as to what part you are going to play for His Kingdom. He is strategically placing His people with whom He can entrust certain orders to, to carry them out. Not just for our benefit, but for the benefit of others and for His Kingdom which is the most important of all.
But as a soldier, you are to think of yourself last. You think of your fellow man, and if you are a good soldier you keep the orders of your Commanding Officer (C.O.) at the forefront of your mind.
You don’t let yourself get diverted from the mission. You press on toward the goal/ prize, that Paul writes about in Philippians 3:14;
“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
You see, there is that word again . . . “call” or our “orders”. The question is, are we ready to hear His call and the weight that that call carries? Are we ready to step up to the plate to be the soldier that our CO needs us to be?
Because the reality is that we are at war.
There are too many of us out there, asleep, to the reality of the wars in the heavenly realms and how those wars translate here on earth and in our everyday lives.
We must wake up and submit ourselves to our Commanding Officer, with full humility and ask the question,” What are my orders, not just for today, but for my life?”
Once we submit ourselves fully to the authority of our C.O., then we can be used for His Kingdom, His purposes and see His miracles before our eyes! His orders begin to make sense and we no longer get caught up legalistic debates because we now have a clearer understanding of the heart of our C.O.
He isn’t a harsh God requiring perfection. He’s a loving, caring God that fully understands the battle we’re in and sees the goal ahead. He is the only one that can navigate us safely through the trenches of the front-lines. So when His orders don’t seem to make sense, just remember, He is weaving you through supernatural (and maybe natural) bullets, giving you commands in order to avoid hidden IED’s and potential traitors.
Those are the realities of warfare and our CO knows it.
While the days seem to be darkening and looming with uncertainty, one thing is for sure, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob will give light unto your path through His Word, His orders. Your existence and calling on your life is far more important than you realize right now and has a dramatic impact on this war. All that’s required from you is humility and daily surrender to His heart.
“From your orders I get understanding; Therefore I have hated every false way” Psalm 119:104
The heart of our CO is what the Book (Bible) is all about, and hopefully, our book as well!
